Mackoy in numbers: Adding up 7 successful years

31 October 2018

When you work in groundworks and civil engineering you're always talking numbers. Be it a contract value for a new build, assigning the number of gangs to a development, or reviewing a site drawing to determine the depth of a trench. In our industry number crunching is always part of the everyday grind. Whether you're operating a dump truck on one of our clients' builds or an Apple Mac at a desk in Head Office.

So after seven years in business, it's hardly surprising we've accrued some pretty significant numbers of our own at Mackoy Ltd. From the size of our plant to our employee work pool. A lot about our business can be summed up in facts and figures. So, we thought we’d share a few of the statistics that define Mackoy groundworks and civil engineering in 2018.

1 - owner (Mike Mayock)

Every ship needs a captain and at Mackoy Ltd that captain is our founder and owner Michael (Mike) Mayock. Mike started Mackoy groundworks and civil engineering out of his home office back in 2011 with just a couple of vans and a handful of employees. And he's been top of the Mackoy food chain ever since. Overseeing a huge amount of growth in the seven years since we started. Including the purchase of four offices in Hampshire, where Mackoy continues to be based to this day.

2 - members of our SHEQ team

Health & Safety best practice is a fundamental part of how we do business at Mackoy and two guys in particular are intrinsic to making sure everything meets the standards we expect our on worksites - our SHEQ Manager David Bacon and advisor Mathew Murray. Both David and Mathew split their time between our Mackoy head office and our clients' builds. Undertaking health & safety inspections of our worksites every single week in their bid to ensure good practice is being followed out in the field.

5 - Site Manager of the Month Award winners (so far)

In March this year we introduced our Site Manager and Site of The Month Awards, an initiative that recognises the great contribution our Foremen make on our clients' builds. So far we've had five winners - Ricky Smith in April for his work at the CALA homes development in Hook. Shane Wheeler in May again for CALA Homes (this one in Medstead), Paul Weaving in June for his work at Barratt David Wilson's build in Whitchurch, Nick Finn in July and most recently Sam Bowers for North Stoneham Park in Eastleigh. Each Site Manager receives £500 as thanks from us along with a framed certificate to officially commemorate the win.

6 - years working with Volvo

This year marks our sixth year doing business with Volvo and we're proud to have a number of their plant vehicles in our Mackoy fleet. Including more Volvo Crawler EC140E Excavators, which we brought in just this year. Bringing us to 80+ Volvo machines. Constantly refreshing our machinery with the latest technology is a big part of our business model at Mackoy and these new Volvo excavators are no exception. Along with 360-degree visibility and climate control, the EC140E models also offer better fuel efficiency. Perfect for reducing our carbon and environmental footprint.

10 - industry accreditations

We know Mackoy isn't the only groundworks and civil engineering company operating in the South of England so we've worked hard over the years to separate ourselves in our approach. In particular our commitment to best SHEQ practices. In doing so we've gained a number of official industry accreditations (10 at the time of printing). Which include endorsements from SAFEMARK, NHBC and Chas, as well as other respected regulatory bodies in the construction sector, for which we're immensely proud.

20 - new Hendy Ford Vans

In addition to our new Volvo Crawlers we also added 20 new Hendy Ford Transit Vans to our vehicle fleet this year, 12 of which we welcomed earlier in spring. With the latest arrivals bringing our total Mackoy van fleet to 80+. Purchased from Hendy Transit Centre Southampton these new vehicles have quickly become an essential part of our groundworks toolkit. With a capacity to hold greater volumes of cargo as well as being kitted out with the latest driver-assist features. As with all of our Mackoy plant and equipment we've wrapped the Hendy's in our Mackoy brand colours. Giving them a distinctive appearance when they're on road and site.

20+ - Air Picks added to our on site toolkit

At Mackoy we're always on the lookout for safer and more efficient methods to perform our groundworks services and this year a successful trial, spearheaded by our SHEQ Manager David Bacon, highlighted Air Picks as a better means to excavate ground around live utilities. Air Picks give our operatives more control when they're excavating as well as being kinder on their backs, necks, and shoulders. As a result of the trial we've rolled out over 20 Air Picks across our worksites so far, with more to come by the end of 2018. As well as an upcoming vacuum testing trial in September too.

20+ - live projects currently in development

Our contract tenders have expanded year on year at Mackoy and 2018 has proven to be our busiest yet. With developments currently on the go for Redrow at Osborne Gate near Bracknell, North Stoneham Park with the Highwood Group in Eastleigh, and Barratt Homes in Whitchurch. As well as other builds with Persimmon in Portchester, Bloor Homes in Binfield, and Bellway in Emsworth. In fact, our groundworkers are currently involved in 20+ live projects in the South Coast. Helping to deliver new communities in Hampshire, Berkshire and Surrey.

26 - groundworks & civil engineering services

We pride ourselves in being a multi-discipline groundworks contractor, offering a fully comprehensive schedule of services for each of our clients. From 278 works and CAT scans (a must for isolating live utilities) to earthworks, site investigations, oversites and foundations, and those are just a handful of the jobs our team are trained and qualified to undertake. You can find out more about each of our individual Mackoy services, as well as our support team and plant vehicles we own on our Services Page.

50+ - dumper lanyards issued to our drivers

On one of his routine site inspections our SHEQ Manager David was made aware of an issue concerning the sharing of dumper keys. As a result he introduced a dumper key lanyard system to get around multiple drivers needing to use the same set of keys. Now operatives are assigned a personalised breakaway key fob, engraved with their initials, which they hand in at the end of every working day and collect again first thing in the morning. So far more than 50 have been put to good use, helping to maintain dumper driving good practice across all of our worksites.

150+ - plant in our fleet

Back when Mackoy began we only had two vehicles to our name but that number has significantly grown in stature. And in 2018 we now have over 150 powerful plant to help us on our clients' builds. Including some of the newest models to hit the market, added just this year. In fact, our fleet now offers multiple rollers, dumpers, haulage HGVs, Roadsweepers, Forklifts and Bowsers. All of which proudly bear our Mackoy name and logo.

200 - Mackoy Good Practice Guides

One way that we've continued to maintain high quality work in tandem with our rapid growth at Mackoy is down to our Good Practice Guide. The guide outlines all the ways we should be quality controlling on our clients' builds. As well as the procedures we need to follow day by day to keep every site operative safe. We've refreshed the content over the years to keep up to date with legislation changes and our own personal experience. In fact, we're just about to unveil our latest guide in the coming weeks. So if you're a Mackoy operative or a client, look out for these arriving at your worksites soon.

300 - operatives (and counting)

Something else that's grown significantly since day 1 is our pool of trusted groundworks operatives. As well as the number of support staff keeping operations ticking over at our three Head Office locations in Hampshire. Including owner Mike's brother John Mayock joining Mackoy as Finance Director, Danny Bowers as our Construction Director and Kieran Walsh as Commercial Manager. Alongside our extensive workforce of Site Managers, dumper drivers, and other CSCS/CPCS accredited operatives.

(Nearly) 500 - health & safety inspections conducted this year

When our SHEQ team David and Mathew aren't busy implementing new Mackoy initiatives they're on site at the live developments our team are working on. Making sure our Mackoy safety protocols are in force and ensuring the quality of our workmanship lives up to the high standards we expect. For our intrepid SHEQ duo this takes up about half of their working week. So it's a huge part of their job role with their inspection rate currently totalling nearly 500 for 2018 so far.

Mackoy Ltd Health and Safety Measures Taken While Cutting Slabs

250,000 - 10 million + - past & present contract values

As a full service supplier of groundworks infrastructure and civil engineering our contract values range from £250,000 to more than £10 million. Working as we do with some of the nation's leading UK housing developers. One such multi-million pound contract we secured, just last year, was a £7 million deal with Bellway for 125 new residential units in Emsworth known as The Haven. Work has been progressing well since ground broke last November with the first phase of homes on schedule to launch in autumn.

The initiatives and accomplishments we've listed on this page are just a fraction of what we've achieved at Mackoy over the years. It's no coincidence that we're the groundworks and civil engineering company of choice for the South's premier house builders. A position we look forward to maintaining as we continue to expand our operations in the coming months and years.
